The original Pettibone's Tavern on Hartford Road in Simsbury was built in 1780 for Jonathan Pettibone, Jr., whose father, Jonathan Pettibone, had been killed in the fighting around New York in 1776. The Tavern served as a stagecoach stop on the Boston to Albany Turnpike and was also a meeting place where Captain Elisha Phelps met with Ethan Allen and his Green Mountain Boys to plan the capture of Fort Ticonderoga. The original tavern was burnt to the ground by Indians in 1800, but was soon rebuilt and reopened in 1803. In more recent times, the tavern has been a restaurant. It was purchased by the Chart House chain in the 1970s, but under new ownership became known as Pettibone's Tavern again. In January, the building was damaged after a fire activated the sprinkler system.

Today Abigail's has been completely restored and the restaurant has reopened under new ownership.

NEW BAR MAKES BIG SPLASH AT HISTORIC MILL ON THE RIVER RESTAURANT! The mill on the river was special to the Podunk Indians. It was special to the colonists who built a dam on the site and used the crashing waters to run a gristmill. Centuries later the Mill On The River persists as a place of enchantment for the residents of South Windsor - and everyone else who discovers it. And now it's even better. When you just want to sit in an extraordinary setting and sip a cocktail, or some Dom Perignon, or a Bud, or a Kaliber, this IS the place at last. "We knew for years we needed a bar, admits Helmar Wolf, co-owner of the venerable restaurant at 989 Ellington Road. "We had to pick the right time to do it." Clearly the last days of 2007 were right. Customers have lost no time becoming regulars. "People are oohing and aahing," Wolf happily reports. "It's becoming a popular gathering place." Mill on the River Restaurant has always been a place people gravitate to when they want to celebrate and be happy.
