The former Pizza Plus has morphed into a beautiful butterfly, offering an upscale Italian menu sure to please the toughest critic. A couple of years ago, its enlightened owner, Jordan Dikegoros, invested a minor fortune, remodeling and expanding until the restaurant could stand shoulder to shoulder with the Capital City’s better dining venues. The restaurant’s name was changed and the menu updated (but some old favorites were retained). In hiring supremely talented Jennifer Krascella as executive chef, Dikegoros found someone more than equal to the challenge. This handsome restaurant also has free parking, eliminating one of the top discouragements to Hartford dining. In just a couple of years, J Restaurant/Bar has become one of the Capital City's top dining destinations.

The authentic Santa Fe cuisine on which Geronimo focuses is rooted in the traditional foods of the Apache and Navajo peoples, with some Spanish and Anglo-Saxon influences.

The bar, one of the largest and certainly the most unique in New Haven, offers nearly 100 types of tequila in addition to an extensive wine list and myriad top-shelf liquors. In winter, the expansive dining room, framed in slate and walnut complete with a leather wall, is warmed by an adobe fireplace (traditionally called a kiva). In the warmer months, the glass paneled wall, which offers a year-round view of Crown Street, opens up onto the largest patio bar and dining area in the region.

While many modern eateries tout "fusion" fare, Geronimo is 100% Southwestern, arguably the original fusion cuisine. The restaurant is named for the infamous Apache rebel whose current resting place, many believe, is New Haven. Geronimo's only request, when he finally surrendered to American authorities, was that upon his death his bones be returned to his homeland. If Geronimo's skull has, in fact, been brought even farther from his home to reside deep within a society of secrecy in our hometown, then at least we could bring a little flavor from his home to ours.

Niles Golovin is a master baker, whose culinary career began “working the line” as a Sous Chef and Chef in several well known restaurants in New York City and Connecticut in the 1980’s and early 1990’s, including the River Café, Arcadia, the Hotel Pierre and the Polytechnic Club. Niles credits Noel Comess, the owner of Long Island City’s Tom Cat Bakery, with planting the seed for the possibility of establishing his own artisan bakery. In 1989, Niles and his wife Susie decided to move their young family to the rustic environs of Litchfield, CT. Over the next several years, Niles worked as a corporate chef and at several CT restaurants while developing a catering business in his spare time. When making his own breads for catering events, Niles concentrated on producing no sugar, no fat, and no dairy “lean breads.” Niles and wife Susie started selling breads at Farmer’s Markets and at Henry Balsamo’s Farm Stand, on Route 202, a short distance from where Bantam Bread Company resides today. This “test marketing” paid off well, as the reaction of the public was very positive. As great as the public felt Niles’ bread to be, he knew he needed to work with a master. Richard Bourdon, master baker and founder of Berkshire Mountain Bakery, in Housatonic, MA, proved to be just the mentor that Niles needed. Bourdon made “all organic breads from sourdough starters,” and he assisted Niles in moving from “theory to practice,” and to the level of artisanal breads - small batch, wholesome, high quality breads of complex and unique tastes, that he makes today. It was there that Niles found “his own rhythm and voice” as a bread maker and in 1996 the Bantam Bread Company was born.
